Pir Najm-al Din Mausoleum is a 13th century structure in Semnan which locals believe is the tomb of an Iranian commander who fought against the invading Mongol Army. The Mausoleum has an Iwan (a vaulted hall, walled on three sides and open on one side), a tomb chamber and a dome. As this mausoleum was previously located inside a cemetery it has no courtyard. The 7-meter high iwan is 3.5 meters wide and has two plane wooden doors. The tomb chamber has a square floor plan that takes on an octagonal shape as it rises. There are a total of four large windows on four sides of the upper octagon that act as lightwells for the structure. The base of the dome starts from under these windows. Pir Najm-al Din Mausoleum has a conical brick dome that is devoid of any tile decorations. The floor of the tomb chamber is 30 centimeters lower than the floor of the iwan. Pir Najm-al Din’s grave is at the center of the tomb chamber directly under the dome and is covered by a lattice wooden chest that is 1.5 meters high. There is a tall, plain Mihrab (prayer niche) in the western part of the tomb chamber. Pir Najm-al Din Mausoleum was registered as a National Heritage Site in 1993.
