Part of the 40-million-year-old Caspian Hyrcanian Mixed Forests, Abr or Cloud Forest is located 45 kilometers from Shahroud on the road to Azadshahr. Abr Forest gets its name from the cloud-like mist that almost always appears to envelope the forest, creating the illusion for visitors that they are walking on clouds. This 11,216-hectare forest has very old oak, maple, Asian maple, alder, ash, mimosa and wild pear trees. Summer is the best time to visit the forest and mornings are the best time for photography. Abr Forest is a protected area which was registered as a Natural Heritage Site in 2011.
